IndyCar is America's top open-wheel auto racing series. Originally started in 1909, the Series' current iteration was founded in 1994 by the owners of Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Since 2019, Roger Penske has owned IndyCar and IMS. Previously known as IRL and CART and run on oval tracks only, the series has run on ovals, road and street courses since 2005.
The premier IndyCar event is the Indianapolis 500, where over 300,000 fans enjoy the top racing IndyCar has to offer. Unlike Formula 1, IndyCar Series race cars have standardized aero packages and feature a driver windscreen to protect the driver against debris. Current top speed on Indianapolis Motor Speedway is over 235 mph and are regarded as the fastest single-seat racers in the world.
